Social Network Stats:
- Twitter (Launched July 2006): 360 Million Registered Users (tho, some studies suggest that there is 21 million active users);
- Facebook (Launched February 2004):
- Google+ (Launched June 2011) : Two weeks after it opened, reached 10 million users. Now, the site has 62 million users
Social Media Stories in 2011:
Arab Spring:
- It all began when a 26 year old fruit seller set himself on to protest corruption in Tunisia. Without social media, Mohmed Bousaziz’ suicide would have been a lone rebellion.
- #Egypt was one of the top 10 trending terms in 2011 (with 8 million tweets)
- Social media help quickened the pace of these demonstration
- The street demonstrations in Tunisia was posted on YouTube (eventho, protest is an illegal act in the county) but caught the attention of influential Tunisian blogger. Then, Al Jeezera broadcasted it.
Stanley Cup Riot:
- More than 150,000 people gathered downtown
- People were tweeting throughout the day on issues happening around the downtown area
- When the rioting was getting bad, social media expert, Dave Teixera, created a website to identify the rioters, www.canucksriots2011.com #CanucksRiot which generated 250 million hits
- Harman Gill launched a Facebook page “Post Riot Clean-Up, Let’s Help Vancouver” (200,000 members joined)

Social Media Networks to be bigger in 2012:
- Pinterest (launched in March 2010).
- 4000% in the past 6 months with 4million active users
- Create boards on topics
- Organize and share images that inspire you or are interesting
- Each image is a pin
